I agree to a certain extent. The rules are "self report violations." EC and BB are trying to take accountability. The problem is that the others that are doing things "wrong"... they will never self report.

It would also require admin from the others schools to have the integrity to self report issues that come up. This is where the problem lies, if a school admin reports a problem then they are the ones that get singled out and punished. But if the school admin just keeps their mouth shut and lets the culture persist then nothing will happen to them.
Both Garfield and Beach have been blatant about recruiting (it starts in the summer with the AAU programs), but which school has someone in charge that is willing to take a stand? Which school is willing to stand against boosters like Roy and Crawford? The basketball "Legacy" at both of those schools has been placed on a huge pedestal that no one dare challenge it or face backlash from the community. Easier at a school like Eastside Catholic that really doesn't have much of a community but a few over-involved parents here and there.
If only people understood how these things are addressed. There is a culture that you either wish to change or enable and it is sad when integrity and character is not at the center of these programs. EVERYONE knows it yet no one is willing to change it and that is the saddest part of it all. Adults that we expect to uphold strong values and be role models are the exact opposite in several of these communities so how do we expect the kids to be any different?
I challenge the Seattle school district and other districts to hold these programs accountable for their actions. Any reasonable adult cannot say that what beach has done has been by the book. They have less than 400 students and yet compete at the top of 3A every year (typical schools have around 1200). So how can a public school (you get the students you get) that has 1/3 the students of all other 3A schools be consistently at the top unless they control who comes to their school? Again, it doesn't take even a high school graduate to figure out the only way to maintain success is to recruit. They are not a college program and need to play by the same rules as all the others but adults look the other way and let the behavior continue.
Boosters/Recruiters are not allowed in any shape or form. Yet Brandon Roy got involved last year to recruit 5 new players to the school in order to win a state title. They didn't earn jack squat. All the players fell short at their respective schools and decided to make their situation easier rather than try harder...no respect for that. 2 kids that played on Rotary just happened to transfer to Garfield along with several others (their senior year). Be nice to see the Times to a roster breakdown on where the players originated from on both beach and garfield. This doesn't even bring into light what goes on at Federal Way (also common knowledge). When you have a head coach handing out business cards to 8th graders and their parents it's embarrassing. Talk to any coach in the federal way area and they will acknowledge what goes on. But then you get back to the issue of self-reporting. Coaches that have integrity and values are the ones that get punished because they have the balls to come clean where other coaches buy in to their own hype.
The state of high school basketball in this state is sad and the fact that everyone knows what is going on but no one is willing to do anything about it makes it an embarrassment. Enough with the excuses and passing the buck, lets have someone step up and restore integrity to the current system we are operating in. First step in solving some issues would be to monitor what goes on with the AAU programs in seattle, this is where it all starts with people like B.Roy swaying players one direction or another. The Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club where they all do open gym is a great spot to basically hold open tryouts for which players you want transferring in.

EC and BB are "doing something about it"...they are self reporting. That is what the rules say to do...I think its not on the schools or coaches to do something about it, but rather the districts or WIAA (that's whats embarrassing) perhaps rules changes, or harsher penalties (i.e. program suspensions) I am hearing Blanchet girls are also in line for a 1 year ban... to be voted on. Most coaches do self report mis-haps...obviously the teams mentioned above are the two of the biggest players. There lack of respect of the WIAA and district (I kinda don't blame them) allows them to continue this game.

Ironic that Eastside Catholic happens to self-report when their lineup is depleted. They had no shot of making playoffs anyway.
